Nintendo Switch 2: The end of a golden age for the Indés?

You could not miss the information this month: Nintendo has finally lifted the veil on the highly anticipated Switch 2. A console which succeeds an emblematic machine, carried as well by the mastodons of the industry as by the enthusiasm of a particularly dynamic independent scene. But if the specs reassure -close to a PS4 pro -, it is above all the price that makes tick: € 469 alone, more than € 500 in bundle. And a Mario Kart World at € 89 in a box.

A different positioning

This pricing positioning, unprecedented in the history of the Japanese consolier, marks a break. The first switch of the name had been able to create an ecosystem favorable to indés games, due to its financial accessibility and its simplified portes. However, with a much more expensive machine, more expensive AAA games, and a launch display case dominated by blockbusters already seen elsewhere, many small developers fear a loss of visibility.

Even more worrying: some studios with a modest scale have not yet received their development kit, while the big publishers have largely had time to work on their portes. Working blind from a simple technical sheet is a risky bet. But can we really ignore the potential economic benefits of the new Nintendo locomotive?

The Nintendo Switch 2 will undoubtedly be a success. It remains to be seen whether she will keep the DNA which made the strength of her big sister released in 2017: that of a welcoming console for all creations, from the most modest to the most ambitious.
