No music tech on a dead planet: how to do it?

Music Tech & Ecology

Music Tech is also concerned by climate change

It was one of the central themes of innovation meetings and transitions organized by the CNM: how can industry respond to its scale to climate emergency? We are faced with a reality that crosses the whole world economy. While the big names in music continue to fill the stadiums and move the crowds (on a certain modest sample of Swifies present at the pop star concerts in early June in Lyon, 31.5 % indicated that he went there in plane ), and that a world tour remains the dream horizon of most artists, can we really act concretely for the planet?

Virtuous examples in the music industry

There is no shortage of examples: the Coldplay group, through its Music of the Spheres , is positioned as a pioneer of eco -responsibility. He announced that he had reduced their carbon emissions by 59 % compared to his previous tour. The room for maneuver was, certainly, probably huge for a group of this stature, but other announcements show the desire to continue the efforts: the impressions of the next vinyl discs will be made from nine recycled bottles (for each disc). If it may seem futile, the influence that this type of initiative should not be underestimated from a planetary group.

Another example, the Massive Attack group has announced to make its 2020 train tour , a strong constraint and a radical position. We could also draw inspiration from Live Japanese houses , where the backline is provided to musicians, allowing to travel light.

But still in search of solutions

Several questions are still subject to debate: how to reduce the carbon footprint without compromising the magic of experience? How to resolve the tension between need for innovation and sobriety requirement? How to protect yourself from greenwashing, that one could, it is true, quickly brandish? One observation: these three issues are ultimately aimed at all sides of the economy.

Music Tech must achieve its share

Anchored in an economic and societal reality, the music industry must do its share: but let's not forget that 80% of the impact comes from spectators and not from production itself. This major challenge remains unresolved. The subject is therefore eminently societal and therefore complex, and must take into account other dimensions to be followed by effects : decrease in the size of events, commitment of actors in mobility and public authorities, citizen initiatives or the sector , redefinition of success for artists ... The industry will not resolve the ecological crisis alone, but it has a moral duty to tend towards exemplarity.
